Getting a Feel for the Route<\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

The trek usually kicks off from Chilling or Skiu, a few hours out of Leh. First day or two you’re along the Zanskar river, then you pick up the Markha river and follow it through villages like Skiu, Markha and Umlung. Nothing fancy about these villages – people growing barley, prayer wheels outside houses, kids on their way to school. That’s kind of the charm of it.<\/p>\n

Past Umlung the trail climbs to Nimaling, this huge open meadow around 4,700m where you camp right in front of Kang Yatse. Next comes the hard part – Kongmaru La, sitting at close to 5,200m. Cross that and it’s mostly downhill through Shang Sumdo till you reach Martselang or Hemis, close to the old Hemis Monastery.<\/p>\n

All in, the Markha Valley trek route<\/a> covers 60-70km over 7-9 days. Some people tack on Kang Yatse Base Camp too if they’ve got the extra days and fitness for it. We usually suggest keeping at least one buffer day in the plan, since weather at this altitude can change without much warning.<\/p>\n

Kongmaru La alone gives you a view across most of the Ladakh range, snow peaks in every direction as far as you can see.<\/p>\n

June to September basically, though we’d point most people toward September if their dates are flexible. Before mid-June there’s still snow sitting on Kongmaru La, and crossing it isn’t safe without the right gear and experience.<\/p>\n

June-July – green valley, wildflowers, occasional snow patch higher up. July-August – peak season, warm and mostly dry but also the busiest, so book ahead. September – our pick. Cooler, clear skies, way fewer people on the trail, and the hills take on this golden-brown shade that looks great in photos.<\/p>\n

Whatever month you choose, it’s worth checking recent weather updates a week or two before you leave, since conditions in Ladakh can shift fast even within the trekking season.<\/p>\n

How Tough Is It Really<\/h2>\n

Moderate, moderately difficult if you want a number on it. No ropes or gear needed. Altitude is what gets people, not the walking itself.<\/p>\n

Nimaling’s already above 4,700m and the pass goes up to 5,200m. Spend two days in Leh before you start, drink way more water than you think you need, take the pass day slow. If you’ve done shorter treks before and are generally active, you’ll manage this one fine.<\/p>\n
