Leh-Nubra Delight
Overview
From the laidback life of the town of Leh, where you visit monasteries and palaces, this trip travels north to the Nubra Valley, also known as Ldumra (the valley of flowers) to the highest motor-able road in the world negotiating Khardung La (pass) at 5602m, with fabulous panoramic views across the Himalayas before travelling to the ethereal beauty of Pangong Tso, a sapphire-coloured high-altitude lake that serves as summer grazing area for nomadic yak herders.

Day 1 - In the early morning flight from Delhi, the plane flies over the Himalayan Range providing amazing overhead view of the whole mountain range with gigantic glaciers and glaring peaks before it brings us to Leh, a fertile valley just to the north of the mighty Indus River (this flight is subject to appropriate weather and perfect flying conditions). Upon arrival, we transfer to the hotel. By the time your check-in is organized, our representative would introduce the tour file to you and handover the tour documents. Late afternoon there is a gentle orientation walk in Leh and its bazaars to acclimatize ourselves to the altitude (3,500m). We take a pleasant short walk in the valley around Leh, heading first to Shanti Stupa. The two-level stupa features a photograph of the current Dalai Lama with the relics of the Buddha at its base. Leh Palace- bearing a passing resemblance to the Potala Palace in Lhasa (Tibet), this nine-storey dun-coloured building took shape under 17th century king Sengge Namgyal. Essentially it has been unoccupied since the Ladakhi royals were stripped of power in 1846. Rest of the day is at leisure for Acclimatization to the altitude (Leh is 3,500 metres above sea level).

Day 2 - Today we take a tour of the Indus Valley monasteries. We visit Thiksey Gompa, an impressive complex rising on a hill above the village which houses a beautiful 15-meter gold-plated statue of Maitreya Buddha, the Buddha of the Future. From here, following a good road which is lined with white-painted and decorated chortens, we arrive in Shey. We will discover the palace of Shey, built in the 16th century AD. Then we drive further to visit the famous Hemis Gompa, founded in the 1630’s and one of the largest and richest gompas of Ladakh. Later in the evening we drive back to Leh.

Day 3 - Post breakfast we drive to Nubra valley via Khardungla via world's highest motor-able road Khardung la. The majestic landscape will leave you speechless. Built in 1976 it was opened to motor vehicles in 1988 and has seen many automobile, motorbike and mountain biking expeditions since then. Upon arrival we will visit the famous Diskit Monastery situated on the top of a cliff. It has an elevated cupola with a fresco depicting the Tashihunpo gompa of Tibet. The gompa roof offers glorious/magnificent views of Nubra Valley, Diskit Village and the point where the Shiyok River and Siachen meet. The main attraction in this area is the Bactrian Double Humped Camels. Here one can enjoy a camel ride (optional), which can be organized. After the visit continue to drive and arrive Hundar Village, where we will stay for the night that provides fantastic views of the Sand dunes from the distance.

Day 4 - From Hundar our Route croso Leh via Sumur ses the Shyok river and we head north to reach Sumur and visit its monastery, Samstanling Gompa, set among the serene green meadows o sumur village. This Gompa is founded by Lama Tsultims Nima in 1841CE. This gompa which belongs to the Gelukpa order is a house of a fine collection of idols, frescos and tangkhas. (4-5 hrs30 kms 1 hr drive). Continuing our Journey we arrive in Leh in the afternoon we have free time to wander through the town, shop or relax.

Day 5 - Today we drive to Pangong Tso, a lake of crystal blue water that is one of the most beautiful of all high altitude lakes. Due to its saline water there is little micro-vegetation. Nor does the lake have any fish or other aquatic life. This lake is not only a tourist’s paradise, but also geologist’s domain. Later after exploration we drive back to Leh hotel.
